Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
