RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
